This article is on the 10 Things we should Know About Dubai Before Moving!, The United Arab Emirates

1. Humidity

So the first thing that I wish I know that I found out very quickly after I got off the plane was how humid it is. Not hot—everyone knows it’s hot as heck— how humid it is so when I went there, so let me tell you I lived in Dubai from Middle 2020 to like the middle of 2021. I left in August and it was Like a hundred a mess of 90% humidity. I stepped out of the airport with my bags and water stuck to me immediately.

It was that hot. And then I called a taxi and we were driving past like 7-elevens and gas stations to get to my dorms and the water was dripping down the sides of the gas stations and the ATMs and like the Stores because the a/c is always bumping in Dubai.

I was like Immediately covered in water and in the buildings crying I’m like, no one told me there’s no one mentioned this so that’s the first thing I wish I Know before I moved there is that in the summer months from maybe like May to September? Not only is it hot and I think I guess like 120 Fahrenheit

2. Transportation

The second thing I wish I Know was how affordable transportation was So when you see Dubai in the media or when I saw it in 2016 I thought that it was a huge city and everyone drives fancy cars, so I thought you had to have a car So I was like wow, but it’s also gonna be super expensive to get around Like I was googling things to do around my dorm that I could walk to which I didn’t even know is gonna be so hot so I didn’t like anyway Anyway, goodbye is super Affordable for transportation.

So I think there’s a huge metro line that goes throughout the city from the Back of Dubai to like Jumeirah or— I don’t even know It goes very far. From my dorm to Dubai Mall, I think was $1.50 each way. Was it? Yeah a dollar though so every day like so I mean, there’s Uber In to you later, there’s Uber. There are taxis and stuff. That’s fine. But the metro system is super clean super efficient it’s always on time and It’s pennies.

So take it. The other thing. I didn’t mention is how awesome taxis were in Dubai Taxis are amazing and the people who drive them are amazing I never Know that this would be something that I was obsessed with but I was so there’s When I was there there was a story that had gone viral about how some put thousands of dollars or millions of dollars in jewellery in that And forgot about it when she left in the taxi driver had returned and she gave him a piece of it for being so honest And basically, Dubai taxi drivers are so honest when I was there, I’ll be honest I was having some fun and I was not always on the best day of mind and I was by myself at like 4 a.m Taking a taxi back to my dorm and they were always so kind but it’d be like do you want to stop and get water? Are you ok would the windows down? You’re safe with me. I never had a single problem Being by myself and advice. That’s another thing you should know about trans public transportation Is it take it.

3. Dating

The third thing that I wish I Know before I moved to Dubai was that Tinder is a thing and so are many other apps. So WhatsApp works, OkCupid, Plenty of Fish, Bumble, and Hinge, Yes, it’s a Muslim country and you need to be aware of Certain things that you don’t do in Muslim countries, but I didn’t even know that those apps would work in Dubai And they do so if you’re moving out there and you’re like wow, I’m never gonna meet anyone. I don’t know anyone there How am I gonna meet a guy or a girl? Those things were fun for you.

4. Smoking

Was that everyone smokes in Dubai— Indoors? Didn’t know that was a thing. I think that’s a Middle Eastern country thing I guess Maybe just Dubai. I think. I don’t know. People smoke cigarettes hookah vape pens Everything indoors so clubs you will leave in your hair will stink. So, if you don’t smoke just be aware of that if you have asthma or allergies be aware of that But otherwise, you know when you’re in the clubs you really don’t notice it. But when you’ve at home, you’re gonna have to shower because you’re not gonna get in your bed with your nasty hair.

5. Wealth

Number five Yes, people are that rich. and I say that because When you see the stereotypical stuff about Dubai like oh there’s vending machines with gold In dubai mall, people drive Lambos to school people really Louboutins for fun It’s true, it’s all true. It makes you feel like such a peasant. So I was there on scholarships I did I didn’t go to Dubai as high as money. I went there because I was a peasant who had won scholarships Thank you for the money Yes, it is true that people have a ton of money.

I was on not parties with my friends casually after school people in the mall like Dubai Mall even Mall of Emirates were walking around in like Balenciaga and Gucci in a Louboutin, Audemar Piguet, they were Rollin. It was it was very impressive but They do have affordable stores there, Carrefour is kind of the Walmart of Dubai and in other places to other countries But I bought like some cute shoes there that people I have them still and people still compliment Like compliment me on them to this day so you can buy them cute stuff for cheap in Dubai. Don’t worry You don’t have to shop at Gucci every day Ibn Battuta mall is where I found the most casual and affordable things to wear And next the Mall of the Emirates So if you’re at the store or if you’re at those malls Look for stores like Forever 21, Sephora, H&M, New Look, New Yorker. Those are pretty affordable But yes people with that rich, it’s crazy.

6. Safety for Women

Six I mentioned this a little bit earlier with the taxi rides, but it is incredibly safe for ladies solo travellers humans in general. I know you probably hear crazy stuff about The Middle East in general and Dubai in general and Umrah de Andrade is in general.

I Have never feared for my life in a terrorist attack when I was in Dubai. I was never racially profiled or Hung up by the police or threatened because I was black I never felt like I was in danger because I was a solo woman I went all around Dubai and neighbouring countries by myself and had a great time. I never felt unsafe getting into taxis. I Dated a few people when I was there and I’ve never had any problems I find opinion as a person who’s visiting an American who was there for a year. You can take it for what it is I find that guys were super nice and Cordial and like very hyper-respectful like they didn’t wanna do anything to offend you so I loved that being smart.

It’s a Muslim country. So there’s a grain of truth in every story that you’ve heard. Don’t go around hooking up with people in the streets being super drunk and throwing up on police cars, like don’t be reckless because I say When people ask me how safe Dubai was I would say everything is allowed and everything is safe until it’s not so You know, everything’s cool like you can drink like in the hotel’s you can I want fun like Break the rules Oh about until you get caught and then she can get real so Anything you do is at your own risk.

7. Languages

people speak English and yes people speak Arabic, so originally, I went to Dubai because I won a scholarship to study Arabic and they said choose anywhere that speaks Arabic and you can go there and I was like if I’m in college and this is like a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and I think Anywhere in this face Arabic I’m going to do part and they love me, which is awesome but people were So against me going to Dubai because they said no one speaks Arabic everyone speaks English.

You’re not gonna learn Arabic but Everyone speaks Arabic pretty much because it is the regional language So I did learn Arabic but also everyone speaks English so they did when they first approached me Hi, how are you ahead to be like, excuse me? If you could just like work with me in Arabic so by the time I got to know people around school people would approach me in Arabic and Like help me practice. And so yes people speak English. You’re gonna be fine A lot of signs are in English – you’ll be fine. And yes people speak Arabic So if you’re going there you can learn Arabic if you want to.

So there were times It must have been like December closer to Christmas It got down to like 65 or 60, which I know it’s like Jamaican cold cuz I’m half Jamaican I feel like I said Caribbean blood, but I got cold I had to buy a few sweaters and I had a jacket and I had like a trench coat thing that I wore People were sweaters like in pants. It gets chilly.

9. Women’s Dress Code

Don’t think that not have to wear a hijab Abaya, or niqab, all the time. And I say this as again a Western woman who was visiting for a year No, we don’t have to work all the time. No, I didn’t have to wear it to the mall I didn’t have to wear it to go II didn’t have to wear it to the beach didn’t have to like it It’s a normal place. I just Yeah after you’ve lived there for like a little bit you’ll pick up how to where and When so you’ll pick it up. It’s really not that difficult Carry a cardigan with you when you first start going around But you’ll pick it up. It’s really not that bad But yeah, those are those 10 things it really I devised a magical place. I loved it I would move back in three seconds if getting a visa was as easy as I wanted it to be but it’s not Um, you’re gonna have a great time living there.
