Responsibilities:
- Demonstrates problem solving/critical thinking skills ensuring effective functioning of the Emergency Department and Fast Track.
- Ensures patients are prioritized for care through utilization if the unit’s triage process.
- Demonstrates organizational skills as a team member.
- Collaborates with the multi-disciplinary team to provide patient care.
- Demonstrates leadership in the implementation of Departmental/Hospital Policies and Procedures.
- Participates in staff meetings and unit committees/projects.
- Demonstrates cooperation, coordination and respect amongst individuals/departments in order to provide excellent customer service (internal and external).
- Participates in developing and achieving unit goals.
- Coordinates and communicates with various departments to achieve optimal care for patients.
- Performs additional duties when required.
- Assists new employees during orientation period when required.
- Ensures implementation of guidelines and new processes in the Emergency Department and Fast Track.
- Floats to other nursing units if required.
- Demonstrates skills in continual assessment of patient using the CTAS Level as guidelines.
- Demonstrates knowledge and skills in performing TRIAGE in the Emergency Department.
- Identifies complications and deviations from the norm.
- Recognizes emergency situations and demonstrates the necessary skills to intervene in a timely matter.
- Demonstrates the ability and knowledge to render care, based on age appropriateness.
- Performs nursing interventions/procedures in accordance with established standards of care and policy and procedures of the Emergency Department.
- Performs Emergency Nursing interventions and procedures as required in a timely manner according to patient needs.
- Ensures and maintains a therapeutic environment for patients and staff.
- Assists medical colleagues with diagnostic therapeutic interventions and has full knowledge of assessing, planning, intervening and evaluating the need for such interventions.
- Maintains accurate and thorough documentation following established guidelines.
- Demonstrates prompt but accurate judgment when rendering care to clients in an emergency situation.
- Demonstrates flexibility with the unpredicted changes in patient dependency and volume of work in the Emergency Department/Fast Track.
- Coordinates and reinforces necessary follow up care, evaluation and or discharge instructions to patients on discharge from the Emergency Department.
- Evaluates the patient’s need for further care and assists them when necessary.
- Floats to other areas within the hospital when required.
- Shares knowledge and skills with colleagues and others.
- Safely administers medication according to the hospital policy.
- Documents medication administration accurately according to protocol.
- As Registered Nurse understands the responsibilities of safe handling, drawing, administrating Narcotic/Controlled Drugs and documentation as directed by policies and procedures
- Demonstrates knowledge and clinical expertise of Infection Control issues, reports and documents as directed in the Infection Control policies and procedures.
Educational requirements:
- Bachelor Degree in Nursing (duration not less than three years) or
- Diploma in Nursing (not less than three academic years in nursing only) or
- Diploma in Nursing and Midwifery (not less than three academic years) graduated from 1998 onward with pre medical secondary school certificate or its equivalent.
Experience requirements:
- Current license to practice nursing
- BCLS certification essential
- ACLS certification essential – must be attained within 6 months of employment through the AHD course.
- TNCC certification desirable
- PALS certification essential
- CTAS certification desirable
- At least two years recent emergency room nursing
- Private hospital experience desirable
- Excellent Customer Service.
