Many applicants believe that only a complete rΓ©sumΓ© would open the door to a good job for them.Β As soon as a gap shows the smallest leaps in unemployment, they reduce their expectations directly or even completely forward applying for their dream job.
However, this fear is based on myths.Β Regardless of whether you have broken off your training, illness or long-term unemployment: Every job seeker can write a rΓ©sumΓ© that convinces the recruiter.
Only two principles apply here.Β First: the courage to leave gaps!Β Be honest and stand by your past.Β Second, fill in the gaps with sensible measures and learn to explain them convincingly.Β Anygulfjobs shows you how to do this using the following example.
Clearly explain gaps in your CV
The most important question is: What made the gaps in your resume?Β The reasons could be:
- long illness or care of a sick family member
- professional reorientation
- termination without notice
- Trouble getting a new job
You do not need to justify a long illness (but which you have overcome) or the care of a sick relative in your CV or cover letter.Β You can mention it briefly to fill in the gaps, but it is not necessary to go into detail.Β
In other cases, you have to be very careful with gaps.Β Do not try to embellish it with empty phrases or even lies.Β After all, HR professionals are trained to expose exactly such tricks at first glance.Β
We recommend the followings:
- If you have broken off your studies or training and cannot find something new straight away, waiting for the next application phase is not an option.Β Get a part-time job or an internship, even if itβs unpaid.Β Try alternative career paths until you find one that suits you.Β In this way, you can prove that you have done everything to make up for your wrong professional decision.
- If you were suddenly fired, perhaps during your probationary period, and you did not have the time to look for a new job in good time, a gap of several months can quickly arise.Β Use them to work on your expertise.Β Take part in training courses and acquire knowledge on your own initiative.Β This shows your future boss that you are ambitious and want to develop constantly.
- If you are unemployed for a long period of time after you have been given notice or have failed to change jobs, you must not spend this time idly on the couch.Β You have enough time to take on larger projects.Β For example, take a language course, start a new sport or teach yourself programming.Β Find a part-time job β or volunteer if that is not possible.Β Prove that you will not give up even in a crisis condition and that you will always find a solution.
How does that look afterwards in the rΓ©sumΓ©?Β Weβll show you the sample below.

Computer systems and programming languages ββhave fascinated me since childhood, which is reflected in my school grades in computer science.Β During my internship at CompuNerv GmbH, it became clear to me that I would definitely combine my professional future with the latest technologies in the IT and entertainment electronics sector.Β Through the contacts with our Asian partners in my current position as a junior sales representative, I have also developed an interest in the cultures of East Asia, which has led me to have been studying the Chinese language intensively for a year now.
