Responsibilities:
- Performs a systematic initial and ongoing assessment of the patient’s physical and psychosocial status, specific to the age of the patient.
- Assesses patient/family educational needs and readiness to learn utilizing appropriate resources.
- Assesses patient/family discharge planning needs, utilizing appropriate resources.
- Collaborates with the patient/family and other members of the health care team to develop and update a plan of care that is consistent with the medical diagnosis and based on the patient’s changing physical, psychosocial, and age-related requirements.
- Establishes realistic and measurable goals that are culturally sensitive and identifies nursing interventions to achieve the goals.
- Provides total, direct nursing care consistent with the plan of care and needs of the patients with respect for the Patient’s privacy, dignity, personal preference, and culture.
- Transcribe physician’s orders and reviews nursing and medical orders for accuracy and appropriateness.
- Prepares administers and documents the administration of oral, parental, and topical medications as prescribed by the physician. Is knowledgeable of therapeutic effects, usual dosages, contraindications, side effects, and adverse reactions for all drugs and parental fluids administered in.
- Sets up equipment and drugs to be ready in Ward and assists Treating Doctor with diagnostic and therapeutic procedures.
- Maintains a safe, clean, and organized environment for patients/family/visitors, and staff.
- Demonstrates priority-setting skills and timeliness in responding to patient needs.
- IV therapy insertion maintenance/discontinuation per doctor’s order and hospital policy.
- Collaborates with physicians to develop, implement, and evaluate a plan of care for patients under care.
- Carries out doctor’s orders with accuracy and in a timely manner; clarifies orders from the physician, if it is unclear; verifying by “read back” and letting the physician sign within 24 hours if it is a verbal order.
- Counter-checks with co-nurse for any dosage calculation of high-risk medications.
- Assessment of patient for risk and application of appropriate precaution against accidental fall.
- Administers medication following the seven (7) R’s of medication.
- Administers blood and blood products per doctor’s order and SG Hospital policy.
- Constantly and continuously monitors patient for the level of consciousness, vital signs, and oxygen saturation, during procedure documenting the same inappropriate nursing form where applicable
- Abide by communication and service standards at all times.
- Attend training and coaching sessions for communication and service standards.
- Service recovery: offer options and solutions to meet and exceed patient’s expectations. Retaining patients and gaining their loyalty is a key part of your role.
- Work on improving patient satisfaction in your area.
- Evaluates the quality of nursing care being delivered and identify opportunities for improvement.
- Updates the plan of care to reflect the patient’s current health status and needs.
- Evaluates on an ongoing basis the patient’s progress and the appropriateness of the plan of care involving the Patient/family and other health team members.
- Evaluates and document the patient/family’s understanding of and response to the plan of care including teaching and discharge plans.
- Participates in presenting patient care conferences.
- Practices within the established standards, policies, and procedures.
- Recognizes when patient care needs extend beyond the limits of personal ability and consults appropriate resources.
- Provides input during the development and review of patient care standards, policies, and procedures and participates in the Interdisciplinary Quality Assessment & Improvement Program.
- Assumes responsibility for professional development and maintains currency in nursing for the area of practice.
- Uses computer technology as required.
- Follows infection control guidelines such as proper hand-washing before and after the procedure; standard precautions; proper and safe cleaning of blood, body fluids, and chemical spills; and reporting potential infections to the appropriate authority i.e. Infection Control Nurse.
- Participates in fire and disaster drills and mock codes.
- Documents untoward incidents related to patients or concerned staff and submits the same to his/her head nurse for endorsement to Nursing Administration within 24 hours of its happening.
- Acts as a patient advocate and develops a supportive relationship with patient/family maintaining a professional role.
- Demonstrates acceptance, caring, and empathy to patients and families.
- Uses verbal and nonverbal communication that conveys respect for the patient/family/visitor/staff.
- Communicates verbal information in an accurate concise and timely manner.
- Communicates written information in a legible, accurate, concise, and timely manner.
- Documents according to SGH policy nursing care activities done to the patient; observed adverse reactions; patient’s response to any treatment.
- Complies with department dress code.
- Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with other members of the health care team.
- Maintains an acceptable standard of attendance and reports to work on time.
- Demonstrates support for Nursing Department Philosophy and Objectives.
- Safely delegates care to non-nursing staff with appropriate supervision.
- Attends and participates in hospital-wide committees, designated meetings, and quality improvement programs.
- Attends hospital and nursing service orientations and continuing education.
- Checks and does aftercare of monitors and equipment to be ready for use at any time.
- Summons security assistance immediately through a paging system or directly to the Security Office for violent patients/visitors and theft witnessed within the hospital.
- Play an active role in Patient and Family Education depending on the patient’s needs.
- Develop and implement action plans to promote person-centered care in your area. Person-centered care revolves around staff, patients and their families, and the community. At SGH, the person-centered care principles are summarized by the CARE (connect-assist-respect-explain) communication and service standards.
- Abide by CARE communication and service standards when interacting with other staff members or with patients and families
- Attend CARE training sessions and other training as required

Educational requirements:
- Bachelor in Nursing.
Experience requirements:
- 2 years of current experience following licensure/registration from the country of origin.
Desired Skills:
- Broad knowledge of theories and practices in general nursing and specializing in medical/surgical.
Qualifications:
- Ability to work in a team environment with members of varying skill levels.
- Highly motivated.
- Learns quickly.
- Fluent in spoken and written English. Spoken Arabic is desirable.
