A current study shows: Whether we realize Home office Restrictions and Flexibility varies greatly. While some are happy about more flexibility, others suffer from the blurring of the Restrictions between private and professional life. And despite the tendency towards burnout in the home office, very few want to go back to the office. We looked at the paradoxical results in detail.

Anyone who switched to the home office due to the pandemic tends to work more outside of the defined working hours, but still assess the work-life balance more positively than at work. This was the result of the current work-life blending study by the software evaluation portal capture.

5 Ways to get rid of office stress

Effects of working from home on the work-life balance

Reading e-mails at breakfast, making an important phone call after the official end of the day. And working through what was left behind at the weekend. Most people who are currently in the home office know this. Home office Restrictions and Flexibility. This is the result of the capture study:

  • 48% of those surveyed also work on weekends
  • 65% more work before or after working hours
  • 61% respond immediately to messages, 53% answer business calls outside of working hours

Nevertheless, 59 percent consider their work-life balance in the home office to be better. At first glance, this seems paradoxical, but in our opinion, it is due to two factors:

  1. Many of them divide their working hours in the home office more flexibly. For the freedom to take a longer break at lunchtime or to spend the afternoon with the family, many like to catch up on their work in the evening or at the weekend.
  2. Our social life has been “on hold” since the beginning of the pandemic. Without events, family celebrations, or going out, it is easier to work in your free time.

Job satisfaction and motivation are balanced

When asked what “works better” in the home office or at work, it shows that only the work-life balance is clearly perceived better at home. Clearly inferior is working with colleagues * inside the Home Office evaluated. For 69 percent of those surveyed, it works better at work. The results for job satisfaction and motivation are exciting because they are very different :

  • The motivation feel 33% in the Home Office to be higher, 35% at the work site and 31% in both cases equally well.
  • 36% are more satisfied with their job in the home office, 38% at work and 25% are the same.

This result shows that people and their preferences are different . For some, flexible and responsible time management are the most important for motivation and satisfaction, for others it is interaction with colleagues and superiors.

the boundaries between work and private life are blurring in the home office

The home office should remain even after the pandemic

Overall, however, this study also shows what many others (including two surveys ) have already surveyed: Home office is here to stay! If it is up to the wishes of the employees, most of them would like to work from home at least on a daily basis even after the pandemic.

  • 34% would like to spend their working hours 50:50 in the office and home office
  • 28% prefer a division of 75:25 (home office: office), 16% prefer the division the other way around
  • 12% only want to work from home, 9% exclusively in the office.

These results are particularly interesting with regard to the mental effects of working from home. While a good quarter feels more stressed at home, almost half of those surveyed feel less stressed in the home office. Nevertheless, 44 percent state that they experience burnout symptoms such as insomnia, headaches, or listlessness. Research into the causes is called for here: The risk of burnout in the home office is currently being increased by the side effects of the Corona crisis. We are excited to see how home office and hybrid work will affect our mental health at work and that after the pandemic will have an impact on the well-being of employees.
