Staring and blue light strain the eyes, Tips for eye-friendly work
What are the biggest problems for the eyes?
“When staring, we only blink about four times a minute instead of 20 times.”
This is not good for our eyes, because instead of about 20 times while staring, we only blink about four times a minute, which makes our eyes dry. Another problem is the blue light, which in the worst case can lead to dry macular degeneration because it causes small “sunburns” on the retina.
Which light would be more eye-friendly?
Marion Weiser: Natural daylight would be best. But in general: the less time our eyes are exposed to blue light, the better. I, therefore, recommend setting night mode on the PC again and again, activating a blue light filter on the mobile phone, or having it in the glasses. Irritated eyes? Tips for eye-friendly work

Bad posture and other warning signs
What are the warning signs that the eyes are overworked?
Marion Weiser: You can actually feel that very quickly when we strain our eyes. The problem is, however, when we are fully in function mode, we usually do not notice it. That is why it is so important to take breaks again and again and briefly listen to yourself: How am I doing right now? Safe indications are watery or very dry, reddened, heavy eyes, or a headache.
My focus is therefore on avoiding the turtle. Every time I open an e-mail, every time I pick up my cell phone or get a coffee, I straighten up, blink consciously a few times, and breathe deeply in and out. These are mini relaxation exercises that are good for the whole body and especially for the eyes. What also helps is a mirror in the line of sight on the desk so that we can see whether we are taking a stubborn posture again and are starting to stare.
Why does posture affect the eyes negatively?
Marion Weiser: The more relaxed the eye muscles are, the more flexible they work. After all, the eye permanently carries out hardly noticeable micro-movements in order to adjust to the different objects that it wants to capture. The more tense, the more difficult it becomes. And that not only affects the direct eye muscles, but also the surrounding regions: head, neck and shoulders .
Relieve your eyes while working
What good can you do to your eyes to relieve them?
Marion Weiser: Drink plenty of water and avoid anything that is not good for the body. The diet plays a major role as the eye – the better the lens in the aqueous humor is nourished, the better it can work.
Carrots are supposed to be particularly good for the eyes …
Marion Weiser: Yes, that’s basically true, but not just carrots, all orange, red and yellow fruits, and vegetables are good because they contain a lot of beta-carotene, which our retina needs. The lens, however, needs a lot of vitamin C, so you should get enough of it. Irritated eyes? Tips for eye-friendly work
And apart from nutrition?
Marion Weiser: Our eyes love movement, so we should move regularly, preferably in the fresh air, and look into the distance as often as possible. You should try this again and again at work. Away from the screen, away from the things that are very close, and look into the distance as far as possible: out of the window, at a point at the end of the corridor … The eyes need this variety. Lots of blinking and darkness for relaxation are also good ways to relieve strain on the eyes. Blinking stimulates the flow of tears and our eyes need adequate moisture. On the other hand, they always need phases of darkness. This is very important when sleeping, but it can also have a very relieving effect in between if you simply close your eyes for a few minutes and also put your warm hands on yourself.
