Where to find progressive knowledge after graduation? When I graduated in mid-January last year, it suddenly dawned on me that I was now going to have to learn new academic things myself.

Maybe it’s obvious to some, but I had not thought about it at all, because I was constantly gaining new professional knowledge through the curriculum, exams and thesis writing.

It suddenly seemed quite overwhelming to me, and I became nervous about whether I could even find out to seek out new knowledge, make sure to take it in, and move professionally. There is always a question that Where to find progressive knowledge after graduation?

Take away the panic – the learning continues

Now a year has passed and I have, to my great relief, got it under control – pyha!

Where to find progressive knowledge after graduation?

have learned new professional things and it is not at all as difficult as I had feared. I have found that there are many good opportunities to seek out professional knowledge outside the safe confines of educational institutions.

Maybe you can nod in recognition of my thoughts, or maybe you just think it could be cool with some new (communication) knowledge? In any case, here is an overview of the places where I have found new and exciting communication knowledge, which you may also find inspiration in.

1. Textbooks

Here is the opportunity to dive all the way down and nerd loose. A sea of textbooks on communication have been written. From the general to the very, very specific.

If you have a special interest in a particular communication niche, you can advantageously google “must read” lists for that particular area for a start.

I myself am in the process of Writing Your Way Ahead In Advertising by Thomas Kemeny.

2. Newsletters

Several skilled communication brains publish newsletters, where they freely collect gold nuggets and share their own knowledge. It’s an easy way to get new and curated professional kicks right into your inbox.

I can recommend making a folder for all your newsletters. In my own folder lands i.a. This week’s Internet gold, Ann Handley’s and Text’s newsletters.

3. Podcasts

I listen to a lot of podcasts. When I go for a walk, when I wash up, when I sit on the train, you get it. But it dawned on me quite late that I could use the format for something other than having fun and relaxing.

There is a whole lot of communication craze to catch up on in the podcast format. Then you can get wiser while going for a walk or washing up.

A few examples could be Marketing Brief, 56k and Digital Thoughts. Bonus! I have also been tipped about good podcasts on work / life balance. You could e.g. Listen to Network Stories, Deliberately Introvert or Failure if you are interested in learning more about it.

4. Webinars

For me, 2020 has been the year of webinars – and I’m sure I’m not the only one. Everyone has made a webinar. And luckily for that. That way, I have been able to sit on my couch and learn a lot of exciting things from skilled nerds.

A tip may be that many unions and unemployment insurance funds regularly offer webinars, which you can attend for free if you are a member (sometimes even if you are not!).

My own union, Communication and Language, offers e.g. webinars on SEO, Marketing automation, and how to make good SoMe on a small budget.

5. YouTube

I’ve most often used YouTube to nerd it a little more technically. You can find many nice videos that go through e.g. Photoshops features, or how to fix a troublesome problem with MailChimp. There are videos about it all. Search and you will (almost always) find!

6. Network

Maybe you have someone in your network who is good at something that you also want to be good at. For example, it could be writing newsletters, giving presentations or writing sharp SoMe postings.

Reach out and ask if he / she wants to set aside half an hour for coffee and a chat about newsletters / presentations / SoMe texts. Explain that you want to be good at just that professional discipline, and that is why you reach out.

You will be amazed at how many tips and tricks you can get out of a skilled professional in just 30 minutes.

7. Coworkers

Maybe you are so lucky that you have landed a job or an internship where you have colleagues with a professionalism that matches yours. If you have, then just knock out the listening pads.

It is my experience that as a recent graduate you can really learn a lot from your colleagues – both by just seeing them in action, but also by asking a lot of questions and asking for feedback in everyday life.

It may seem cross-border as “the new one”, but most would like to tell if you ask sincerely and interestedly about their work.

You (fortunately!) Do not have to be nervous at all that you are not learning new things. I quickly found out. It comes all by itself.

You do not need to review newsletters, YouTube playlists and networks to give yourself “adult homework” for. As long as you are curious about your subject and its possibilities, learning and development will come easier than you think.

Do you know of other places where you can seek out new (communication) knowledge? Feel free to write a comment and let’s inspire each other.
