Why do HR Managers say I’ll call you back after the interview?

It is a frequently asked question that why do HR Managers always say I’ll call you back after every interview? and what will you do if he didn’t call you back?

There are few resons.

1. When the interviewer is not in the hiring position / not the decision-maker. Maybe because he has to discuss the interview situation with others or he wants to compare you with other candidates.

2. If the interviewer is the final decision-maker, and if he said to you that he will call you back then it means that he needs some more time to evaluate the interview with you or otherwise he doesn’t want to hire you.

3. However in many industries, you have to “go back and wait for the result” even if you have passed the interview. Because there may be several rounds of interviews and in each interview, they will evaluate the performance of all the candidates, and finally they will pick the most suitable one for the position.

What do HR think about the behavior of asking about the result of an interview?

Answer: It’s very common to ask HR about the result of an interview, but they hate the “stalker” type of job seekers who have to give an explanation again and again. Because in many cases, it is not HR, but the managers of functional departments and even higher-level decision-makers who decide the candidates for the position.

How to inquire about the result of the interview? The advice given by AnyGulfJobs.com is:

  1. The best time should be about a week after the interview because the company has to consider multiple candidates during the interview.
  2. Be sincere when calling for inquiries, you don’t need to be shy.
  3. Ask more open questions and useless closed questions. “How long is the recruitment period for this position” and “I don’t know what your company’s impression of me is” will give HR more information than “is your company ready to admit me” or “Can I come to work”.
  4. Asking questions which are concise and to the point. HR’s are very busy, please go straight to the topic.
  5. One question is enough! Too many phone calls can be annoying, and it may turn good things into bad things.

Why is HR’s are reluctant to inform directly the result of the interview?

Answer: This is probably the most criticized point of HR’s work facing job applicants. There are several reasons why they are unwilling to directly inform job applicants of the results:

  1. Some job applicants are not completely out of the game, they are still on the candidate list, but they may be relatively low in the ranking order, and they still have the hope of being selected. HR could not immediately announce the failure of the interview.
  2. Informing job seekers of the failure news, whether in direct or euphemistic ways, is a blow to job seekers. If you are repeatedly rejected, no matter how strong your heart is, it will inevitably fall into a psychological shadow. The unspoken rule of “silent rejection” is beneficial to both parties.
  3. Difficult to understand and easy to misunderstand. HR and job applicants have only been in contact once or twice through interviews, and the inability to understand each other and the situation of not being admitted can easily cause “antagonistic” emotions.
